MEDICAL AID FOR LOW-INCOME EARNERS

Low income earners are expected to gain access to private health care following the launch of the first medical scheme option that is based on the Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB).

Prescribed by the Registrar of Medical Schemes, it was launched last week by Resolution Health Medical Scheme to cover in and out-of-hospital benefits for less than R300 a month.

Chairman Jannie Kotze says it will allow income earners access to private health care.

Only seven million South Africans belong to medical schemes and the figure has remained stagnant for a number of years.

"We recognised the need for an option that would enable the millions who did not have access to medical scheme benefits."

Resolution Health entered into an agreement with the National Hospital Network and Medi-Clinic for the hospital benefits will be offered through the CareCross network.

The plan will cover 271 conditions, including 24 chronic conditions, as prescribed by the Medical Schemes Act.
