CHOOSE MEDICAL FUNDS WITH CARE

Employees of local authorities once again have a choice of six approved medical funds, binding for two years. "This decision should not be made lightly," said Barry Kruger, chief executive of Munimed, one of the six approved funds from which employees can choose.

"Factors such as the medical benefits offered by a particular fund, as well as proven sound administration, should tip the balance in such a decision." He said employees should look beyond the cost of membership. "People could save themselves a lot of hardship and perhaps also money if they paid more attention to factors such as the quality of service rendered by the fund administrator," he added. "Products or member contributions can often be very attractive on paper, but fall far short when it comes to the actual healthcare benefits for a member and his or her family." He said in some cases the fund administrator did not even effectively meet the minimum service requirements prescribed by legislation. "In addition to good benefits at affordable rates, the fund administrator also plays a decisive role in this regard," says Kryger.

Employees of local authorities have until November 30 to choose a medical fund.
